It Happened in Baghdad…
In November of 2004, a group of American soldiers entered an empty house in Baghdad. They were ready to attack the source of the noise coming from around the corner. What they found, however, wasn’t a dangerous enemy but a puppy. Although it is against the law, the soldiers adopted the dog, named him Lava and decided to take him with them to the USA – an almost impossible task! Dogs need vaccinations to cross borders, but the American military vets wouldn’t even look at civilian dogs, and Iraqi vets weren’t willing to help either. Many attempts to get Lava out failed, but the soldiers never gave up and Lava finally found a new home in California.

Elephants in Russia
When one circus carriage suddenly caught fire during an international tour in the Novosibirsk region, Russia, two elephants were taken out of the burning carriage into the bitter cold. In temperatures of -40°C, the animals soon suffered frostbite’ to their ears. The circus keepers decided to warm the elephants up with two glasses of vodka mixed with warm water. It helped, and the elephants started “roaring happily as if they were in the jungle”, one keeper said. Like with humans, alcohol can make animals feel warmer, but it lowers the body temperature, scientists warn. However, the Novosibirsk zoo director said that the elephants were not harmed or intoxicated and that with the alcohol they escaped certain death.

7 ČÁST ÚLOHY 39-43
Přečtěte si článek o divadelní hře The Mousetrap od Agathy Christie. Na základě informací v textu vyberte k úlohám 39-43 vždy jednu správnou odpověd’ A-D.
The Mousetrap
In 1947, Queen Mary asked for a radio play to be written for her 80th birthday by Agatha Christie. The play was broadcast on May 30, 1947, and it was called Three Blind Mice. Christie adapted the radio play into a theatre play four years later and although she
was quite happy with the original title of the play, she renamed it The Mousetrap. The name had to be changed because of protests by another author, Emile Littler, who had produced a theatre play also named Three Blind Mice before the Second World War. The
suggestion to call it The Mousetrap came from Christie’s son-in-law Anthony Hicks, who borrowed the idea from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet.Agatha Christie gave all the rights to the play to her grandson, Matthew Prichard, as a present for his 9th birthday. In 1956, British film producer John Woolf bought the rights to the film from Prichard. Nevertheless, Woolf had to agree to the condition that he wouldn’t make a film version earlier than 6 months after the last performance of the play on stage. Woolf died in 1999 and The Mousetrap was still playing at St Martin’s Theatre in London, where it is still played at present. With its 24,500 performances, it is the longest-running show in history. And, obviously, there won’t be a film version until at least 6 months after the last stage performance in London.
Christie herself did not expect The Mousetrap to run for such a long time. In her autobiography, she reports a conversation that she had with Peter Saunders, a theatre producer, right after the first performance in 1951. He expected that the play would not even be performed for twelve months. Agatha Christie disagreed and gave her play only about eight months on stage. However, in September 1957, The Mousetrap broke the record for the longest-running play in the West End.
Since the beginning, more than 10 million people have seen this classic murder mystery, where at the end of each performance, audiences are asked not to tell the identity of the killer to anyone outside the theatre. The producers and actors want to make sure that the end of the play stays a secret for future audiences. Christie was always very angry when the endings of her works were revealed in newspapers.
The play inspired producer Stephen Waley-Cohen to start a theatrical education charity called The Mousetrap Theatre Project. The project is for young people from poor families or with disabilities. With the help of the project, they can see the best theatre performances live and don’t only learn about theatre plays as a part of a school education programme.

The True Story behind the “Afghan Mona Lisa”
Sharbat Gula was a 13-year-old girl from Afghanistan when her face (49) (C) appeared) on the cover of National Geographic magazine. It was 28 years (50) ) (B) ago) and the picture immediately received international attention. Her eyes were bright green and she was wearing (51) (B) a) red scarf over her hair.
Photographer Steve McCurry took the photograph when Sharbat, (52) (A) whose) parents were killed during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, was living with the rest of her family in a refugee camp’ in Pakistan.”There’s real emotion and real beauty (53) (C) in) the picture;’ Mr McCurry says. “It shows the situation of a girl who suddenly lost her home and (54) (B) had) to escape from her country because of the horrible war. She ended up in a refugee camp (55) (B) many) miles away. The picture shows a poor girl with a dirty face but with strength and courage in her eyes.”Ever since the picture (56) (B) was published) in 1985, the magazine has received thousands of questions about the girl. Mr McCurry returned to the region more than ten times (57) (A) to) look for her. Unfortunately, he didn’t know (58) (B) anything) about the girl; he didn’t even know her name! But he never stopped searching the refugee camps, (59) (A) although) the search often seemed hopeless. In 2002, he managed to find a man who knew Sharbat’s family. A couple of days later, the man returned with the girl’s brother.
His eyes were as beautiful (60) (C) as) Sharbat’s. Finally, Mr McCurry and a team from National Geographic met Sharbat in her (61) (C) native) Afghan village near the Pakistani border.
“It was a miracle that we found her. I somehow expected the girl from this photograph to walk through the door, and I was (62) (B) shocked) when a 30-year-old woman entered the room,”McCurry says. Sharbat Gula herself didn’t know about the fame of her picture. She had never seen it before the team arrived. Today, Mr McCurry is still in contact with Sharbat; he wants (63) (C) to make) sure she’s all right and that she gets money for the picture known all over the world.

Hello All,
If you are tired from sitting at home in front of your computers then this article is for you. I would like to invite for a trip to my favourite place in the mountains in Beskydy.
These are the most beautiful mountains in Czech Republic! I adore the mountains because while I am standing on the top I can see the harmony of the world and breathe with the air , that gives me power and energy to live my life.
It’s true that the mountains are awesome due to their breathtaking view and amazing landscape in different seasons!
I am never bored there. Usually my friends and I spend most of the weekends skiing and snowboarding there in winter. In summer we climb to the top, make open fire and play the gitar under the stars.
If you need changes, just join me in my favourite place.

I haven’t even bought a present. Well, this is just great! How am I going to pass my exams if I don’t have time to study?

ПравильноHello to everyone! And we welcome at a contemporary art museum. Before we begin our tour, I would like to discuss a couple of rules. 1. Please do not drink or eat anything during our tour. There is a café near the entrance where you will find cold and warm drinks as well as cold sandwiches. After the tour if you want a proper hot meal, I recommend Ruby’s steak house across the street which has some of the best steaks in the city. Rule number 2. Please know that the museum forbids flash photography. Feel free to take the pictures but please remember to turn off your flash. And finally please do not touch any the art work on the ground floor. There are some sculptures on the second floor that you may touch. Our point when we get that but it is prohibited to touch anything on the ground floor. Any questions? All right, let’s get started. We are entering the main room now which contains paintings only by American artists. However, our museum director wants to expand the collection to include international artists. So we’re currently talking with some museums in Europe to try to do that but now we are quite happy with the American painting we have here now. For example, take a look at this piece by Gregory Plath. It is our biggest painting on the floor measuring 6 meters across and 3 meters tall. If you can believe it though we have something even larger to show you on the second floor. Anyhow, Gregory has started painting 30 years ago when he was just 19 years old but it was not even a couple of years ago when the people have noticed him. In fact it was that picture here painted 2 years ago that made him famous. Gregory is well-known for his use of sunlight but even his paintings of the night sky which you can see on the left shows his fascination with light. See how he painted the stars? People often criticize him for over using the sun. But his paintings of night clearly shows that it is not only the sun that interests him but light itself. Now please follow me to the next room.

Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde died as a poor man in France in 1900 and his friends could afford only a simple grave for him outside Paris. But in 1912, Wilde’s remains* were moved to the most famous cemetery in Paris. His new grave, with a statue of an angel, was created by American sculptor Jacob Epstein in 1914. It soon became a magnet for tourists who started to cover the stone with lipstick kisses. Unfortunately, the lipstick sank into the stone and every time it was cleaned, the grave was damaged even more. So, a year ago, French conservationists decided to clean it and keep it safe behind a glass panel. The restored grave was presented on the date of the anniversary of Wilde’s death.

Silent Night
The world’s most famous Christmas song, Silent Night, was born almost 200 years ago in an Austrian village near Salzburg. It came into existence by chance. Mice chewed through the bellowsl of Franz Xaver Gruber’s organ2 right before Christmas Eve and the
instrument stopped working. Nobody could imagine a midnight service3 without music. Fortunately, the priest Joseph Mohr had written a little poem celebrating the beauty of Christmas night. When Franz Gruber composed a simple melody to the poem, which could be played on a guitar, the service on 24 December 1818 was saved. The men, who named the song Stille Nacht, had no idea that they had created a legend.

When Pal Nagy decided to rob a house in Budapest, he didn’t know it was the house of an Olympic fencing’ champion, Virgine Ujlaky. The sportswoman was busy practising for a tournament when she saw someone trying to get in through the window of her bedroom. It took her just a few seconds to push the burglar against the wall with the sword on his throat. Virgine didn’t hurt him but quickly called the police who arrested the man. But before that, the policemen had to send for a doctor to treat the burglar, who was in terrible shock. Ujlaky said:”I wasn’t scared at all. It was good practice as I have a competition this week:”

The French Resistance’ against the Nazi occupation of France is usually associated with heroic acts such as damaging bridges or trains. But in a town near Paris, two artists, the Mauméjean brothers, decided to protest against the occupation in their own quiet way. Historians have recently discovered a coloured glass church window created by the brothers. It shows Adolf Hitler in the act of murdering St. James. St. James was one ofJesus’12 apostles and in the artwork he symbolises all Jewish people. Although Hitler’s hairstyle can be recognised in the portrait, his moustache was hidden behind his arm to avoid any trouble. Still, the work was a brave act of artistic and religious resistance and solidarity by the non-Jewish French.

Black Box Flight Recorders
The “black box” is, in fact, painted orange to be found easily after a plane crash. The device is the work of an Australian, Dave Warren, who believed that it could solve the mysteries of plane accidents. In 1953, he invented an instrument that recorded flight data and voices from the cockpit’. His idea was simple – if the “black box” could stay in one plece after a crash, experts could replay the final moments of the flight, find out what happened and help to prevent future catastrophes. Warren’s motivation was a family tragedy. In 1934, his father died in an air disaster over the Tasman Sea. The first “black boxes”were built in the UK, but the idea was born in Australia.

Mistake Out
Bette Nesmith Graham never wanted to be an inventor – she was much more interested in art and dreamt of a painting career. However, in 1945, when World War II ended, she divorced her husband and found out she didn’t have enough money in her bank account for herself and her small son. She decided to learn to type and only a few months after the war, she started to work as a secretary in a Texas office. In the 1950s, electric typewriters were becoming more and more popular but in learning to use them, Bette and other secretaries often made mistakes. Of course they hated re-typing whole pages just because of one single error! So Bette started to look for an elegant way to correct them. She remembered that artists painted over their mistakes on canvas’, so why couldn’t typists paint over their mistakes?
So, with this idea in mind, Bette mixed some white tempera paint with water, put the mixture in a bottle and took it – together with a tiny paintbrush – to her office. One brushstroke2 over a mistake and… it worked! Soon Bette regularly used this liquid to correct her typing errors and her boss never noticed. One of her colleagues saw Bette correcting mistakes with this brilliant invention and asked for some of it. Mrs. Graham found a little bottle at home, put a “Mistake Out” label on it and gave it to her the next day. In a short time, all the secretaries in the office had Mistake Out for free and corrected their mistakes too.
In 1956 Bette started the Mistake Out Company from her Dallas home. She transformed her kitchen into a small laboratory where she mixed various paints and chemicals with her electric food mixer. All the time she was trying to improve her invention. Soon, the first customers appeared and Bette’s son Michael and his friends filled bottles for them in the garage. Although Mrs. Graham worked nights and weekends to meet the growing number of orders, she didn’t earn much money.
One day, Bette was tired and sent some letters to the wrong addresses by mistake. This brought problems to the office and her boss fired her. She lost her job but could now spend all her time selling Mistake Out. The production soon grew into a million-dollar business. Bette later re-named Mistake Out as Liquid Paper, patented the product and moved the company to her own factory. Although a rich woman now, she never forgot the hard time she had when she was out of work and without money for herself and Michael. That’s why she started two foundations helping women find new ways to earn a living, especially in business and art.

I live in my own special world, I love reading fantasy books about supernatural characters. My parents don't understand why I never wear bright colours. But if you're a fan of the darkness and black like me, maybe you will. I want to find the love of my life who doesn't smoke and will share my interests.
-
45. PIERRE (29). I am a Frenchman who used to own a small restaurant, where I prepared my beloved French cuisine. But now I've moved to England and have no plans to ever enter France again. I am not interested in sports and I am a non-smoker. I prefer a good restaurant to a disco and I like light colours, especially white. I love cooking and discovering new tastes, but my main interest now is to find the woman of my dreams for a lasting relationship.
-
46. Gina. She is a university student of French language, who is looking for a guy to go out with at weekends. She is not interested in a long-term relationship, and she prefers someone who loves parties. She doesn't mind smokers at all
-
47. Kylie. She likes cooking and going to restaurants. She loves French cuisine and language and smokes cigars. Her dream is to marry a man who speaks French and who will not mind travelling around France with her.
-
48. Julia. She is a computer technician in a French company, who dislikes discussing computer problems in her free time. She loves exercise and sports and often wears bright colours. Her future partner should be a non-smoker who also leads a healthy life-style

School Boys in the Persian Gulf
In recent years, the United Arab Emirates have introduced important education reforms. The reason is simple: although plenty of money is sent to schools, more and more boys leave secondary schools without (49) (taking) final exams. At present, as many as 25% of boys in the Gulf region don’t finish secondary school. They often choose jobs in the public sector, the army or police, instead. And those boys (50) (who) successfully pass the exams are often older because they had to repeat some classes during their studies. As a result, only 30% of universities in the Gulf region have male students. This low number has economic effects for a country in which not (51) (a lot) . women are willing to marry a man with lower education.
In an oil region, such as the Persian Gulf, families are so rich that their children don’t need to study (52) (difficult) . Boys often come to school with personal assistants that help (53) (them) with homework and carry all their bags. These assistants do everything that students normally (54) (have) to do. But what will happen when oil (55) (disappears) in the Gulf?
In Dubai, the largest city of the United Arab Emirates, public schools get more than enough money from the state (56) (but) only 40% of all children go there. The rest (57) (attend) private schools where teachers are not only better but also push children towards higher education.
Public schools often have teachers from (58) (other) Arab countries like Egypt, Syria and Jordan. At Emirati schools, boys and girls are separated, motivation is low and pupils don’t seem interested (59) (in) learning. Experts also agree that teachers in the Emirates are not trained well and the situation needs to (60) (improve) .
According to parents and educators, many mistakes (61) (were made) in the Emirates in the past. One of them is that the population believed that (62) (---- ) government would always find jobs for young citizens. The authorities are sure that just putting money into the school system won’t (63) (bring) positive results.Their goal is to have more young Emirati men complete secondary school education, go to universities and have a better vision for the future.

Baseball competition in our school.
Our class baseball team became a winner in a regional cup. We were playing versus a strong team. It was a hard game but we won.
The competition was in Prague 12th of June. Thanks a lot to our fans and friends who came to support us.
We are proud of our victory as it was a final cup in this school year and we trained a lot. Our competitors were students of sports club *Tigers*. We played against them several times but they are as strong as we are. That’s why it is always interesting to play with them.
Although it was a tough game we liked it as all guys played as one team. I didn’t like how the couch stopped the game suddenly apart from it everything was ok.
For this year the tour of competition is over and it will start again in a half a year. Next year we are planning to participate in a country competition.

1 Where will the girls sleep at the weekend?
ПравильноPřepis poslechu
Hi Christine. It‘s me, Samantha. Listen. I have just called the hotel to reserve a double room for us but unfortunately they are fully booked for the whole weekend. The owner was really kind and recommended one of the hotels nearby but it was too expensive for us. But don‘t worry. Although the weather forecast predicts clear skies all weekend, we won‘t be sleeping right under the stars. I‘ll bring a tent and we can easily share. But Christine, remember to pack a sleeping bag and some extra warm clothes. It can get really cold in the mountains at night. It won‘t be like sleeping in you parents‘ warm mountain cottage we stayed in last weekend.

2. What kind of pizza will the man order today?
ПравильноPřepis poslechu
M: What kind of pizza shall I order today, Sally? Last time we had the one with salami, olives and mushrooms. And it was delicious.
W: Yes, it wasn‘t bad. But Mark is coming over for a visit and he‘s a vegetarian so without salami this time. Just olives and mushrooms.
M: Actually he said he‘d eat in town today and would come later so we don‘t have to worry about his preferences.
W: Alright then. Let‘s order the same one as last time but without mushrooms today. Only salami and olives.
M: Are you sure? I can imagine it without olives but not without mushrooms.
W: You know what? I don‘t care. Order whichever you like but quickly. I‘m really hungry.
M: Fine, no experiments today. Let‘s have exactly the same as last time and don‘t worry, you don‘t have to eat the mushrooms, I‘ll eat them from your parts.

ПравильноPřepis poslechu
On Wednesday afternoon, a sixty-one-year-old-Chicago whisky salesman was walking to his car with a briefcase in one hand and a bottle of whisky in the other. Suddenly, a group of four teenage boys tried to rob him. M: So you had to take care of him?

M: Hello, aunty Rose? It‘s me, your nephew Jimmy. Thanks for coming to pick me up.
W: Hello Jimmy. I was afraid I wouldn‘t recognize you at first. It‘s been years. How are you? Did you get work as an architect after university? It‘s been your dream, hasn‘t it?
M: I‘m fine. Actually, I still have a year to finish my studies. But yes, I‘m planning to apply for a job as an architect after my final exams. Anyway, sorry about changing our meeting place. I wanted to buy a plane ticket originally.
W: That‘s OK. It was my mistake. I thought trains are not for young people these days. Most of them only fly. And then I noticed that the message says I should pick you at the main station.
M: You see, I‘m trying to save as much as I can so I decided to travel cheaper then by plane. You know, I‘m saving money for a wedding gift for my sister. I still don‘t understand why she has to get married so young. But it‘s her choice.W: Jimmy, your sister is 24, isn‘t she? I already had two children at her age. Well, call me old-fashioned but I believe, the sooner people get married the better. Why wait? Oh, well, now let‘s hurry home. Leo and Callan can‘t wait to meet you. You remember my grandson Leo? Callan is his school mate. Those two are always together. They‘re like brothers.
M: Well, it‘s not a long drive to your house, is it? I mean, you live in the city centre if I remember correctly.
W: Oh that place was very nice and I had lived there since I was born. Last year, a very noisy young man moved in next door. I asked him a thousand times to keep the music down but it was no use. So I found a small house for sale and moved away. The house has a lovely garden. You‘ll see.
M: My dad always told me that you should have been a gardener. According to him, you‘d have been perfect in that.
W: Thanks for the compliment. The truth is that it‘s the activity I‘m most interested in. I won the Garden of the Year competition so I must really be doing it right. Do you like gardening?
M: Sure. But my favourite hobby is painting. I don‘t think I‘ll become a professional painter but some people have already bought some of my pieces from me.W: How interesting, Jimmy. There‘s a very nice art exhibition in the town. Would you be interested in seeing it?
M: I‘d love to. Can we go tomorrow?
W: Tomorrow is Sunday, I am certain they‘re closed. But it will be the first thing we do on Monday morning, OK? You‘ll be busy on Sunday anyway. All the family wants to meet you. Oh, look, there is my car.

Welcome to our museum of dolls and teddy bears. Here you can see the largest collection of dolls and teddy bears in the world. The museum was founded in 2008. The idea to open it was born of long time hobbyists, of Suzanne Quinnlane, a collector of dolls, and he cousin, Barbara Marshall, a teddy bear collector. It was Suzanne‘s mother who often told the girls that they have collections so large that they should start a museum. And that‘s exactly what they did. Suzanne Quinnlane works in the museum‘s office from Fridays to Mondays and on Saturdays, she even gives personal tours of the museum. The museum is situated in a historic house which was build in 1911 for a local doctor. The house was designed by British architect whose name was John Macknie. The surname is spelled M A C K N I E. He is best known for his work on many commercial centres. Between 1946 and 2006 this house belonged to the town hall and served as a theatre. However, the house was in bad condition and needed renovation. The renovation finally took place in 2007 and brought the building to its present size of 3614 meters squared. The teddy bear and dolls halls are situated on the first and second floors where I‘ll take you in a while. They display over 3000 teddy bears and dolls from the last century. The museum‘s oldest bear is from 1906 and you‘ll find it on the second floor. We‘ll finish our tour on the third floor where we have the art hall and the library. The library contains children‘s books from all over the world. In the art hall, you‘ll see illustartions of dolls and teddy bears from different children‘s books. Please, feel free to enter the art hall whenever you want. But if you‘re interested in the books form the library, you must arrange a visit there at least a week in advance. You can only use the books there as it‘s not possible to také them out of the building because they are very old.zde najdete cvičení na poslech, zaměřených na maturitní otázky

22 According to the woman, what makes a perfect holiday?
ПравильноPřepis poslechu
What makes a perfect holiday? I‘ve heard that it depends on how old you are when you take the holiday. I‘ve seen a research recently, which discovered that most people had their best holiday ever at the age of 34. Interesting, isn‘t it? When I was a teenager, I thought the more money you had, the better holiday you could enjoy. But now I know that even a luxurious holiday in a best holiday resort and the most expensive hotel won‘t make the holiday of your lifetime. Now I know that a great holiday has nothing to do with age or even the cost. It also doesn‘t matter where or how far you go. The only thing that matters is who you go with, whether you‘re 25, 55 or 75.

23 What is the man’s opinion on using Facebook?
ПравильноPřepis poslechu
Almost everyone uses Facebook nowadays. But I feel that many people share too much personal information there and don‘t understand nothing is really private on the web. I especially see this when people share information about their work and complain about their bosses or job on Facebook. I think it is a great way to get fired or to make people feel badly of you when you are applying for another job. We often criticise teenagers for their online behavior but parents are no better. They should think twice before they post images of their children on Facebook because they may end up in the hands of criminals. What I recommend is that if you don‘t want the things you post on Facebook to be on the front page of the best selling newspapers, don‘t post them there.zde najdete cvičení na poslech, zaměřených na maturitní otázky

Free Bus Rides
In 2003, a 106-year-old woman from Os in Norway received an offer for free bus rides to school. Town officials sent it to her because they thought she would first attend school in autumn 2003. Ingeborg Thuen, born in 1897, is the oldest citizen of Os and actually started school in 1903 when she was six years old. Computers in the town hall of Os read the ’97 of her birth year as 1997 and added her to the list of children starting the first grade in autumn 2003. When Ingeborg received the offer, she laughed and said, “Free rides are a very good idea, although now I live near the school. When I started school back then, I had to walk for an hour every morning, which was really hard. However, as I can already read, write and count, I will skip school this time,” she joked.

Syringe1
The development of the syringe became very important with the arrival of penicillin in the 1940s. This drug blocked up glass syringes and even heat sterilization didn’t help, so the syringes couldn’t be used again. Later, in 1951, Harry Willis, a distributor at a drug company, designed and patented a syringe made of plastic. However, Willis needed a plastics expert to make his idea of the new tool a reality. This is why he visited Charles Rothauser, an Australian manufacturer who was using plastic to produce toys, and asked him to use his knowledge of plastics in order to make a plastic syringe according to Willis’ design. Rothauser made the first syringes out of polyethylene, a plastic which softens with heat and has to be sterilized chemically, which was too expensive. So he tried another material – polypropylene – a plastic that can be sterilized by heat. He succeeded, and today Australians argue that it was a toymaker from Australia who gave us this life-saving tool.

An accident
A scared Finnish woman called the police at 3 a.m. to report repeated doorbell ringing at night. At first, the policemen thought it was the work of neighbourhood kids. On closer inspection they discovered that ants had built a large ant hill inside the wall of her house. This was pressing on the doorbell parts in the wall and made them ring. The officers identified the ants as pharaoh ants. This insect is attracted to warm buildings, because it is the way to survive in cold, northern Europe. The police had to use a knife to cut through all the materials the ants had brought into the wall and destroyed all the ants to stop the woman’s doorbell ringing.

World War II Message Found
Last month, David Martin, a car mechanic from southern England, found the skeleton of a homing pigeon 1 with a message in the chimney while he was renovating his house. During World War II (WWII), pigeons like this one were taken to the Nazi-occupied territories in France and sent back to Britain with messages from the British Army. Historians believe that this pigeon began its journey in France in June 1944 and never arrived to deliver its message. The pigeon either got lost in the bad English weather or was tired after its trip across the Channel and ended up falling down the chimney. The message that was found by David Martin next to the pigeon was certainly secret because it was written in a strange code. Now historians are trying to understand the message and find out whether it could possibly have changed history.

What you didn’t know about dolphins…
Four Australian lifeguards were on a training swim about 100 metres from the beach when several dolphins appeared and pushed them together by making circles around them. When one lifeguard tried to swim away from the circle, two bigger dolphins forced1 him to go back. That’s when the lifeguards noticed a huge white shark only twenty metres away from them. The lifeguards spent the next forty minutes surrounded by the dolphins before they could safely return to shore. According to scientists, dolphins normally do this to protect their young against sharks, so their action was natural.

Welcome to the Magical Gardens of Cornwall!
Enjoying the warmth of the Gulf Stream, the magical gardens in Cornwall are home to a number of exciting, rare and beautiful plants and trees. Here are invitations to two of them. HELIGAN GARDENS were originally created by the Tremayne family in the mid-18th century. The Gardens had been admired by visitors only until the last owner moved to Italy. After his departure in 1920, the place was closed and left without any care and was forgotten by everyone until 1990, when the devastated gardens were discovered only by chance. In 1991 the gardens became the scene of the largest garden restoration project in Europe and in 1992 they were opened to the public. Today, the gardens are unique and one of the most fascinating places to visit. You will find an Italian garden, a superb collection of walled gardens to the north, and the The Jungle, an exotic sub-tropical valley with bamboo tunnels and majestic banana trees, to the south. The journey through The Jungle will make you think you are far from the UK. And all this is outdoors for you to enjoy the unique coastal weather! On arrival, you’ll be given a free garden map. All parts of the gardens are clearly marked there as well as the famous Heligan Kitchen & Bakery. Why not stop by for a traditional Cornish cream tea and sandwiches or taste some of the fruit and vegetables grown here? Although we don’t grow enough for our kitchen, we buy the rest from Cornish farmers and we are proud of the regional flavours we create. Heligan Gardens offer a perfect walk for you and your four-legged friend. However, we kindly ask all visitors to keep their dogs on their leads at all times. Whether you plan to visit Heligan Gardens on a sunny day in summer, or in the middle of peaceful winter, you are guaranteed a unique experience. Every time of year has its charm here. However, the best time to visit the Gardens is in late spring and early autumn.
Opening hours: Heligan Gardens are open daily from 10:00 am to 7:30 pm – the last tickets are sold at 6:00 pm (except on Mondays: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm – the last tickets are sold at 4:30 pm).
Admission fees: Adults £13.50, Students £8, Children (younger than five) no charge Heligan Kitchen & Bakery is open also to non-paying visitors. Visitors with a valid ticket to Heligan Gardens will get a 10% discount at Heligan Kitchen & Bakery on all meals.
TREGREHAN GARDENS, ideally situated on the south coast of Cornwall, have been home to the Carlyon family since 1565. Tregrehan Gardens are proud of its extraordinary collection of plants, as well as wildlife residents. However, the pathways in the gardens were created long before modern health and safety requirements so explore the gardens carefully. The gardens contain hidden hazards especially for kids (e.g. holes and lakes) so it is necessary that children
are accompanied at all times. We also ask visitors to leave their pets at home as we have some rare ducks and goats in the gardens. A map with marked picnic areas is included in the price of the ticket. Look for our Tregrehan Café on the map, too. The café offers large selections of tea and coffee, freshly made cucumber sandwiches and home-made ice cream. We do not provide soups or warm dishes, but you are allowed to bring your picnic basket with you and enjoy lunch with your family or friends in the gardens. To anyone arriving at the gardens by bicycle, there is a special parking place for bikes as well as a number of lockers where you are free to store bags and equipment while you’re exploring the
gardens on foot. At the Ticket Office, please tell our staff about your means of transport to get a gift from us. We love nature and like to reward those who reach us in a way that does not harm the environment.
Opening hours: March–May: daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, June–October: Mondays only
from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Admission fees: Adults £6.00, Kids free. There’s free entry to Tregrehan Café for everyone – no need to buy a ticket. Even if you’re not visiting the gardens, we’d still love to see you!

Me and my grandfather
My grandfather came from a very poor family of potato farmers. Although he died when I was only seven, he has played an important role in my life. I was not only named after him, I also inherited1 many of his books and share his love of history. As a history teacher, I love to read about past ages in his books. In one of them, I once found a photograph of him singing in a church. I have never believed in God, unlike my grandfather, but the memories of him singing religious songs to me still move me greatly. His faith was surely one of the reasons for finishing his medical studies successfully, but not the only one. He had a very strong will2 with his medical studies, but surprisingly not with his bad habit. Even as a doctor, he loved smoking cigars and that’s definitely not the route I want to follow.
My grandfather was actually given the first name Herric, but while studying at university he changed the spelling to Herrick. For a long time, nobody in my family knew what made my grandfather add a ‘k’ to the end of his name, but I’ve done some research and found the reason. Herrick is the original Old English spelling of the name, which dates back to the 11th century. I’ve always been Herrick, and that’s fine with me.
Another thing that belonged to my grandfather is a gold ring. When I was at secondary school, my grandmother gave it to me and told me its story. She didn’t remember who had given it to my grandfather. Perhaps he got it from a patient who found him important in his life. But one day, he lost it while working on the family farm and couldn’t find it. The farm was later bought by a family friend. One day the friend came to my grandfather’s office and anded him the long-lost ring. He found it in the field and recognised it by the initials on the inside.
I also have a photo of Winston Churchill, which used to be in my grandfather’s office, where he is smoking a cigar. As a small boy I used to think the man in the picture might be my grandfather, who also smoked cigars, and that’s why they looked similar to me. When someone told me it was Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister, I believed he and my grandfather were friends. Later I was told that my grandfather had kept the picture to show how greatly he had loved and respected Churchill, although he had never met him. It was given to him by one of his patients.
My grandfather could have been a successful big-city doctor, but he chose to work in his hometown as a general practitioner3. Unlike specialists in just one medical field, such local doctors had to be good at everything and my grandfather was no exception. He treated people, delivered babies and did surgery. And even though he didn’t like working on a farm, he was always ready to help his beloved local farmers. I think he had a special reason for doing all that for his neighbours. The town helped pay for my grandfather’s studies, as his parents could not afford it. I am sure that refusing attractive job offers in the city and coming back to work for the town as a doctor was a natural way for my grandfather to pay it back.

Facebook
Facebook is one of the world’s biggest social networking sites. In an interview, its founder Mark Zuckerberg (50) (C) said) that the Facebook team would do their best to keep it the web’s number one communication site, even though it would be (51) (C) hard) work.
Facebook started out after Zuckerberg’s introduction of Facemash.com in October 2003. At that time, Zuckerberg was studying at Harvard University in the United States. After hacking into Harvard’s database, Mark (52) (B) was able ) to load the Facemash site with pictures of students. Facemash site visitors (Zuckerberg’s Harvard classmates) had the chance to compare the pictures side by side and decide who was “hot1” and who was “not”.
However, (53) _ (B) a few) days later some angry students asked Zuckerberg to shut the site down because they didn’t want their photos on the site. However, one thing was clear, many people wanted (54) (B) to look up) pictures of their friends on the Internet.
(55) (C) on) 11th January 2004, Zuckerberg registered the facebook.com domain. According to Mark, Facebook (56) (A) was created ) thanks to the inspiration from the Facemash incident. It was the first chance for students to get in touch with each other over the Internet, so within 24 hours, over one thousand students signed up. Soon after that, more universities (57) (C) joined) the network.
Facebook is different from (58) (B) other) social networking sites. People say that Facebook is better (59) (A) because) you can communicate with people you really know and trust. Before, (60) (A) most) people didn’t share their real identities online. Facebook has given people a safe environment in (61) (C) which) they can interact online. It has changed the way people view the world. A friend from any country is only several clicks away.
In 2005, (62) (A) a) university magazine in Australia published a study which said that about 85% of students on the Internet had accounts on Facebook. At the end of 2005, Facebook was introduced in the U.K. and since 2006 the site (63) (C) has been ) available in 35 languages. More than half of its users aren’t at college any more, and the fastest-growing group is 30-to-40-year-olds. Every day 15 million users update their profiles to tell their friends and the world what’s (64) (A) going) on. The number of users is still increasing.

1 What does the man want to buy at the Christmas market this year?
ПравильноEvery year, my wife sends me to the Christmas market. I always buy a Christmas tree there but this year, my cousin promised to give me one of the trees from his garden. So, I don’t have to buy one. He also gave us special handmade candles. So, instead of spending money on the candles in the Christmas market, I’ll have more money for presents. My daughter told me that she wanted a sweater with a Christmas tree on it. Well, so far, I’ve only seen a pair of socks with a Christmas tree in an online shop but no sweater with a Christmas tree. I hope there’s going to be one at the Christmas market because that’s what I want to buy there. If they don’t have any sweaters there, I’m going to buy the pair of socks from the online shop instead.

ПравильноA: Darling, my brother has invited us to his birthday party.
B: Oh, what’s he planning this year? I hope it’s not playing cards again. I couldn’t stand that last year.
A: Don’t worry, no card games like last year. This year he’s invited lots of interesting people from his new job in the theatre. Jane Black, the director of the theatre’s new play will be there.
B: Really? Now I am excited about the party because I will finally have a chance to chat with her.
A: I’m sure you will. I, personally, can’t wait to have a piece of the birthday cake.
B: Lucky you. If I weren’t on a diet, I would be looking forward to having a piece too. I have already lost 10 pounds and I don’t want to put them back on.
A: Alright, alright. My brother has also invited the same rock & roll band as last year. It’s a pity you can’t dance because of your recent back ache.
B: I don’t feel like dancing anyway. So, I’ll be fine without it.Неправильно -

3 What did the woman order for lunch in the new fast food restaurant today?
ПравильноMike and I went to the new fast food restaurant today to have lunch. They offer lunch menus, called three-for-two which means that if you order three things, you only pay for two. I wanted to try everything. Their soup of the day, their burger, and one of their desserts of course. Today they had tomato soup which I love. But guess what, they had run out of the soup before I could order some. So, I decided to have a burger and two desserts instead. But then, when Mike told me he was going to order two burgers and a cake, I thought his menu would be a better idea. And it was, and I was happy I changed my mind in the end. I just wish I had ordered the dark chocolate cake. The white chocolate one wasn’t as tasty as I had expected.

5 Harry liked the evening music performance in the Blues Bar.
ПравильноA: Harry! You? Here? In the Blues Bar?
B: Karen, hi! Well, I wanted to see this performance so much because the band sounds great on their last CD. But, to be honest, I expected something else. Their concert this evening was a disappointment. At least for me.
A: Was it? I really enjoyed the music. Is it your first time here, Harry?
B: Yes, it is. I usually go to Ricky’s Jazz Bar. It’s my favourite club, and the tickets are much cheaper than to the Blues Bar. If I didn’t get the tickets for tonight’s performance as a present, I wouldn’t be able to afford to buy one myself.
A: Oh, did you get them as a present? Funny, I got my ticket as a present as well, on my birthday in June. And in August I’m coming again because my favourite guitar player, Jose Lopez, is having a concert here.
B: I see you’re interested in music a lot. Do you play the guitar yourself?
A: Yes, I do. And you Harry? You used to play the drums in the school band, right?
B: Yes, that was the first musical instrument I learned to play. The guitar was the second. Learning to play the drums was much easier for me, than learning to play the guitar though.
A: I see. By the way, did you notice the children in the audience this evening? They weren’t even school age.
B: Yeah, I did. I’ve heard there are children’s music programs in the Blues Bar in the mornings. I think it’s great that the parents take their children to these programs. But I think bringing them to the club for any evening performance should not be allowed.
A: Well, I agree. But I remember, when I was a kid, I loved going out with my parents in the evenings. It was so exciting with them, not like being home with my babysitter. I couldn’t stand it. She made me go to bed very early.
B: Hm, I loved my babysitter. She had blond hair and…
A: You seem to like blond girls, Harry. What about the one I saw you with last week, is she your girlfriend?
B: She is. She performs at Ricky’s Jazz Bar.
A: Really? So, she’s a singer?
B: Let me finish. She comes on stage before musical performances to entertain the audience.
A: That sounds interesting.
B: It is. But singing in a band? She’s never even tried doing that. Listen, she’ll be in Ricky’s Jazz Bar next Saturday. Why don’t you come there with me?
A: Well, I was planning to visit my mom on Saturday evening. But I can go and see her on Sunday. So, I’ll go with you.

ПравильноHello and welcome to the after-school football club information meeting. My name is Mitch Miller and standing next to me is Robert Dwight. I’m the manager and he’s my assistant. I’m going to give you some information about the training sessions, and then I’ll show you around. Robert is going to take the applications from you and he’s going to give you a timetable. This way, you can see exactly when your children’s training sessions take place. And now something about the training sessions. Our after-school football club teaches children basic football skills. Most of the time, children have fun during the training sessions but sometimes they want to fight. That is not allowed. Please, tell your children about it. Now, let’s talk about the clothes and equipment. All the equipment will be provided by us, the football club. The football shirts won’t be bright yellow anymore, they’ll be white. This new design was created by me and I hope the children will like it. Unfortunately, the football shirts are not provided for free. They cost 12 pounds. And if you pay another 20 pounds, you can also get a matching sweatshirt. As for the training sessions, we aren’t going to spend the whole time on the football field. We’ll always finish our training in the gym, doing some strength exercises. So, the football field won’t be the only place for training. Before their first training session, the children will receive their electronic cards. They’ll have to use them to get into the changing rooms. Your children will receive them in the office, not at the reception desk. And, please, make sure your children don’t leave their cards at home. If your child can’t take part in the training session, let me know in advance. My phone number is 847933158. Call me anytime from 9 to 2 on weekdays. And that’s all for this part of the meeting.

21 What did Mary not do on her holiday in Scotland?
She did not:
ПравильноA: Hi Mary! How was your trip to Scotland?
B: Fun! We started in Edinburgh and wanted to spend the day there walking around the city.
A: But one day is not enough to see all of the sights on foot.
B: Exactly. That’s why we paid for a guided bus tour, so could enjoy all the sights.
A: I see. And did you see any of the famous lakes?
B: We hired a car and drove to the most famous one. But the lake disappointed me. My husband also wanted to hike up the highest mountain in Scotland, Ben Nevis. I’m not keen on hiking and walking up this mountain with him was tiring. But the view from the top of it was just awesome.
A: I can imagine. And did you have a chance to go anywhere else?
B: Well, we wanted to try horse-riding on a farm near Edinburgh, but our car broke down on our way there. And we had to return to Edinburgh by bus without reaching the farm.НеправильноA: Hi Mary! How was your trip to Scotland?

22 Why is the woman moving from the village?
Because:ПравильноA: Alice, are you really moving from the village back to the city?
B: Yes, I am. The decision was not easy. I’ll have to get used to noise, once again. I still remember the day when I moved to this village 10 years ago. It was such a quiet place, and the river flowing through it was just amazing. When the railway was built a year ago to connect the village with the city, we expected crowds of tourists coming here and damaging the countryside around the village. But nothing like that happened. The few tourists that come here are quiet and behave well. However, instead of tourists, the railway brought industry to the area. Although the new factory near the village doesn’t make any noise, the river- which was once clean, is now full of waste materials. Water pollution killed every living thing in it. And that’s what made me decide to leave the village.

23 How does John feel now?
ПравильноA: Oh, John! Congratulations! How was the exam? I’ve heard it was very difficult.
B: Yes, it was. But I was expecting it to be. Actually, as soon as I read the test questions, I knew I would pass because I was well prepared for it. I’ve done my best and that’s it. I think some classmates worry about their exam marks too much and then they’re disappointed, and so are the parents. My mom, for example, always says it’s a pity I didn’t get better marks. But I never care how many points I get. Anyway, the only thing I’m looking forward to now is getting to bed. I wasn’t able to relax yesterday and the exam was tiring, so I have no energy left. Sorry, I’ll have to call my mom now and tell her the news. She’s always so stressed when I take an exam.

A: My cousin once won a flight in a balloon in a TV competition. He works as a helicopter pilot for the fire service, but still, flying in a hot air balloon was an amazing experience for him.

Me and My Violin
blog by Kelly Miller
I wish I were a better violin player. Unfortunately, I gave up learning to play the instrument too soon. I still remember how upset my parents were when I quit taking violin lessons at the age of 12. My parents wanted me to do something in my free time and they were willing to pay for it. They’d spent a lot of money on the lessons and then I no longer wanted to continue. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy playing the violin at the age of 12. Actually, Mrs Baker, my violin teacher, made me fall in love with it and I often spent my free time practising. It became a great hobby of mine. But one day Mrs Baker moved back to her hometown and I couldn’t imagine taking lessons with anyone else. I’m sure she wouldn’t be happy I quit taking lessons, especially if she knew it was only because of her. But I kept playing at home just for fun or at family celebrations. After quitting I suddenly had more free time but I never took up any other hobby.25 Why did Kelly Miller stop taking violin lessons when she was twelve?

Sleepy Teenagers
Many secondary school teachers complain that students are tired in their lessons. The teachers believe it’s because teenagers leave home for school without having a proper breakfast. But scientists have found out eating more in the morning is not what would prevent students from being so tired. Nine hours of sleep would. However, to get it, students would have to go to sleep by 10:00pm at the latest. According to scientists, the problem is that teenagers’ brains tell them to start feeling sleepy at around 11:00pm so going to bed earlier wouldn’t help as students wouldn’t fall asleep anyway. What would help is a different daily school routine. When students get up at around 7:00am to be at school by 8:00am, they haven’t had their nine hours of sleep. That’s why they’re tired. Some schools are thinking of solving the problem by giving students 20-minute breaks between the morning lessons. But
scientists disagree and suggest that secondary schools move the time when school starts from 8:00am to 9:00am. This way students wouldn’t be so tired.

hieves who broke into a shop in the German city of Mülheim an der Ruhr spoilt 1,200 bottles of König Pilsener beer when they removed the bottle caps. There were special symbols on the bottom of some of these caps and with such caps people could win pieces of sports equipment. The police believe the thieves were trying to win the prizes because all of the bottles they opened were only König Pilsener. Surprisingly, the thieves left the beer inside the bottles without even trying it, but as the bottles stayed open, the beer was left to spoil. The thieves left most of the bottle caps in the shop, collecting only the winning ones. The König Brewery1 spokesman said: ‘It is impossible to find the stolen bottle caps among the hundreds we receive in the contest every day. But there’s still a chance to catch the thieves if we now watch for someone who sends us an unusually high number of winning caps.’

The Perry County Bridge
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is a state organisation and it now hopes to find a new owner for an 82-year-old historic bridge in Perry County. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would prefer not to destroy the bridge and so it is looking for someone who will buy it. The state said it would even pay to move the bridge if needed. ‘It could work well as an entrance to a public park or to a walking path. Or if a private owner needed a 450-foot
bridge to access their property,’ H. B. Elkins, a member of the Cabinet explained.

The Pyramid of Khufu
For the first time ever, scanning technology is being used on the Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt. A new project is trying to map this old structure as well as discover any secret rooms and halls in it. Experts believe that King Khufu, who built the pyramid, was also buried in it, but they haven’t found the exact place yet. No other new spaces have been found, either. This means the scientists haven’t been able to draw exact plans of the pyramid yet. However, the scan has shown something extraordinary about the material used to build the pyramid – a few of the stones are warmer than others. The reason remains unknown. Scientists believe it means something and there are still questions to be answered.

The Jane Austen Centre in Bath
The Jane Austen Centre in Bath is a perfect place to learn about Jane Austen’s experience living in this amazing city between 1801 and 1806. The permanent exhibition, called Jane Austen in Bath, has been the most
visited exhibition in Bath since it opened in 1999. The Centre is located at 40 Gay Street. Jane Austen actually lived in Gay Street for a couple of months in 1805. Although her house was higher up the hill, it was on
the same side of the street as the Centre.» Exhibition “Jane Austen in Bath” and the statue of Jane Austen Set on the ground floor, the exhibition is one of the most important places where you can learn about Jane Austen, one of the most popular English fiction writers. The exhibition’s helpful staff, dressed in 1805 clothing, will show you around the ground floor. The thing visitors usually can’t wait to see is the statue of the writer. Fans of Jane Austen often asked what she
actually looked like, so in 2002 Melissa Dring, a police forensic artist, painted a portrait of her and gave it to the Centre. Melissa Dring’s work was later used by sculptor Mark Richards, who made a statue of Jane Austen based on Dring’s painting. The sculpture has been on display at the Centre since 2014.
Note: Wheelchair users cannot enter unless they agree to be guided by our special assistants.
Moving around freely is forbidden.

Set on the ground floor, the shop offers souvenirs that will remind visitors of Jane Austen. The souvenirs in the Centre’s gift shop were made for the Centre itself and are not available anywhere else. The objects sold in the shop are extremely popular, especially the candles with a portrait of Jane Austen on them. Every year, during the week before Christmas, the shop sells three times as many of these than at any other time of the year.

The first tour, which starts at 8:00am, doesn’t cost anything. The second one starts at 2:00pm and costs five pounds. The guides aren’t as easy to recognise as the exhibition staff dressed in clothes from the time of Jane Austen. The guides all wear their everyday casual clothes with the Jane Austen Centre logo on their jackets. All walking tours start at the Jane Austen Centre.

Like Father, Like Son
In the 19th century in the USA, many children didn’t receive any formal education as it wasn’t common at that time to send kids to school. George Hearst, a boy from Missouri, really wanted to study and was lucky that his parents could afford to send him to the Franklin County Elementary School. After finishing his elementary education, he wanted to continue studying because of his great hobby – geology. However, at that time, there was no school specialising in geology, so instead of attending any other secondary school he started to work, and read all about minerals in his free time. One day, after several years of self-study, he heard about the discovery of gold in California. He went there immediately. He was surprised that his knowledge of geology was almost as good as the knowledge of the university-educated geologists he met there. After ten years, even without a degree, he became a famous prospector1 and made millions of dollars. He settled in California, married Elizabeth Collins and became the father to a son named William. And because he was always sorry he hadn’t
attended school more, he wanted to give his son William the best education. After years of private education, George Hearst’s young son, William, was sent to Harvard University to study law. However, William’s wish was to be a publisher, not a lawyer. That’s why he was more interested in writing for the university magazine than in studying and had problems with discipline. Soon, the school management told William they would send his father a warning letter if his behaviour didn’t change. They finally stopped being patient when
they found an alligator, which William was taking care of, in his room in the halls of residence.
On that same day, they mailed a letter to his father to inform him what William had done. However, it didn’t help much and only a few weeks later, William left a donkey in a teacher’s classroom with a note around its neck that read, “Now there are two of you”. But that still wasn’t the worst. William sent all the teachers little parcels with pictures of wild animals with the teachers’ faces drawn over them. He was expelled2 from the university immediately and
the school wrote one last letter to his father to inform him about it.William had to leave Harvard. His father George was very upset and had a terrible argument with him. He was so infuriated that he could hardly talk to his son for some time. However, a few years later, in 1887, he gave his son a final chance and lent him money so that he could start his own business. William wanted to show his father his qualities in what he loved – writing. He was inspired by Joseph Pulitzer, the journalist and owner of the New York World newspaper. So, William bought the New York Morning Journal, a newspaper which had not been very successful, and he also started the New York Evening Journal. He began to live his dream. Soon, his idol Pulitzer became his rival.
William put a lot of money into his New York newspapers and bought modern printing machines. He also hired the most talented writers of the time, including the very popular Mark Twain and Jack London. He offered Pulitzer’s editors higher salaries to work for him, which they accepted. Pulitzer acted quickly and made his newspaper cheaper to increase circulation3, but it didn’t help. William had kept the price of his newspapers the same since the beginning
and by 1897, William’s New York newspapers were selling better than Pulitzer’s. Unfortunately, William’s father died before William became a millionaire and before he could finally make his father proud of him.(www.history.com, http://www.biography.com; upraveno)

The Swiss Army Knife
-
There’s definitely one thing to admire about the Swiss Army knife: you (50) (B) don’t have) to carry a lot of tools1, they are all in one small knife. Maybe you own one yourself (51) (C) or) you are planin to buy one in the near future. But how much do you really know about this famous knife?
In the 1880s, the Swiss Army wanted to give its soldiers a tool (52) (B) which) could be used for most of the soldiers’ needs – something that they could use to repair their guns, open cans and bottles and cut various materials. However, in Switzerland, there were (53) (A) no) factories that could produce such a tool, so the Swiss Army (54) (B) asked) German experts for help. But in the end, a talented Swiss inventor, Karl Elsener, made something that was exactly what the army (55) (A) needed) .
The invention, which Elsener offered to the army, was a special pocket knife with various functions. Elsener paid attention (56) (A) to) every detail of the knife and the result was amazing. The main difference (57) (C) between) his pocket knife and an ordinary knife was its original design.
When Elsener started producing them for the Swiss Army in 1891, the knives (58) (A) were given) to lieutenants and captains2 first. (59) (C) Although) they soon became popular with most of them, some captains still weren’t satisfied. So Elsener decided (60) (B) to go) back to his workshop and added a corkscrew, a thing used to open bottles of wine, to the knife. Everybody liked the idea. Since then, the knives (61) (C) have been) popular with Swiss Army soldiers. Today, every Swiss Army soldier gets one.
The knives didn’t become famous around the world until World War II, when American soldiers (62) (B) fell) in love with them. After World War II, the soldiers brought them back to America. As it was difficult for the Americans to (63) (C) say) the original name of the knife, Schweizer Offiziersmesser, they called it simply the Swiss Army knife. Very soon after the war, the Swiss Army knife became one of the symbols of Switzerland just like Swiss chocolate.
Today, the Swiss Army knife is available in over 100 different models and in many colours. However, red is (64) (B) more) common than other colours. Besides traditional tools, modern Swiss Army knives include things such as USB flash drives or laser pointers.
